Sheila A. Khan-Variba
Sheila A. Khan-Variba represents employers in state
and federal court and agency proceedings. She also advises clients on
various employment law issues, including wage and hour, hiring,
personnel policies, discipline and termination. Ms. Khan-Variba has
conducted numerous trainings for management and staff on the prevention
of unlawful harassment, discrimination and retaliation in the workplace,
among other topics.
Ms. Khan-Variba began her legal career as an
Associate in the employment litigation practice group of Wilson Sonsini
Goodrich & Rosati in Palo Alto, California. After nearly three-years,
she joined Fox Entertainment Group, Inc. as Employment Litigation Counsel.
She represented numerous Fox-related entities in litigation and various
agency proceedings. She actively litigated her own cases, managed
outside counsel, monitored investigations and responded to employee
complaints.
While earning her B.A. in Rhetoric from UC
Berkeley, Ms. Khan-Variba was a volunteer income tax assistant with the
IRS and served as Director and Tax Coordinator of Cal’s Student Legal
Clinic.
Ms. Khan-Variba received her law degree from the University of
Pennsylvania Law School in 2001. At Penn, she was active in the Black
Law Student Association and served as Vice Chair of the Sadie T.M.
Alexander Conference, commemorating the achievements of the first
African American female graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Law
School. She also volunteered with the Philadelphia Unemployment
Compensation Project, where she represented indigent clients in appeal
hearings concerning the denial of unemployment compensation benefits.
Ms. Khan-Variba has served as a contributing editor
to The Rutter Group California Practice Guide on Employment Litigation
and is co-author of Challenging Barriers (Los Angeles Lawyer, Nov.
2005), addressing issues relating to state and federal disability
discrimination laws. Ms. Khan-Variba received the Outstanding Volunteer
Service Award from the San Francisco Bar in 2003. She is a member of the
California Bar Association, the National Employment Law Council, the
Black Women Lawyers Association and Los Angeles County Bar Association.
